Subject: Patient Concerns Regarding Proposed 2027 PFS Cuts to Orthopedic Care (Docket: CMS-2027-PFS)
As a patient, I am writing to express my serious concerns regarding the proposed 2027 Physician Fee Schedule rules. I am deeply concerned that the 7% specialty-level funding cut targeted at orthopedic surgery will directly harm patient access to timely, high-quality care.
Please reconsider these changes due to the severe impact they will have on patients:
- Reduces Access to Joint Replacements: The proposed 20% reimbursement cut for hip and knee replacements devalues essential, life-changing procedures. It makes it incredibly difficult for local independent practices to absorb rising operational costs and continue providing top-tier care.
- Penalizes Same-Day Care: The proposed 50% payment cut for same-day services creates a major barrier for patients in pain. Forcing patients to schedule, travel to, and pay a second copay for a completely separate second appointment just to get a routine cortisone injection is a heavy burden, especially for seniors.
- Creates Longer Wait Times: These deep, compounding cuts will impact medical staffing levels. This will inevitably lead to longer wait times for specialized appointments and cut down on crucial face-to-face time with our surgeons.
Healthcare policy should protect timely and convenient care. I respectfully ask CMS to protect patient access to independent specialized care by withdrawing these proposed reductions.
