Dr. Joseph J. Mesa is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine at Delaware Orthopaedic Specialists. He earned a B.S. in Biology from St. Joseph’s University and his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in 1994. He completed a research fellowship at the Rothman Institute, followed by a surgical internship and orthopedic residency at SUNY Downstate, and a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Miami. He serves as a team physician for numerous local high schools, as well as the Wilmington Blue Rocks, Delaware Blue Coats, and University of Delaware Athletics, providing expert orthopaedic care to athletes at every level. Dr. Mesa has also been recognized as a Top Doctor by Delaware Today multiple times.

Dr. Mesa went on to St. Joseph's University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. Upon graduation, Dr. Mesa went on to Jefferson Medical College where he obtained his Doctorate of Medicine in 1994.
Throughout college and medical school Dr. Mesa was and avid rugby player and captained the team during his senior year of college. After obtaining his degree, Dr. Mesa underwent a one year research fellowship at the Rothman Institute in Philadelphia. During that year Dr. Mesa had numerous orthopedic research articles published.
In 1995, Dr. Mesa moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. to begin his orthopedic training. He completed both his surgical internship and orthopedic residency at SUNY downstate and graduated in 2000. Dr. Mesa then furthered his training with a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Miami which he completed in 2001.
Dr. Mesa spent the next three years in a private practice in Atlanta, Georgia. During that time he was the team physician for various high schools in the greater Atlanta area. He was responsible for overseeing the athletes on all sports teams at the schools.

Born and raised in Wilmington, DE, Dr. Joseph J. Mesa is a proud graduate of Salesianum High School. Throughout college and medical school, he was an accomplished rugby player, serving as team captain during his senior year. Today, he remains actively involved in the local community by overseeing multiple high school athletic programs and supporting the development of young athletes. He also speaks Spanish fluently. He enjoys spending time with his family, working out and reading in his spare time.
